Measuring ten feet high at the shoulders, woolly mammoths were among the largest in an era of very large mammals. These giants lived in Europe, Asia, and eventually North America. Their long, curved tusks make mammoths instantly recognizable.
History: Scientists have learned a great deal about woolly mammoths from the several carcasses that have been found locked in ice. They were perfectly adapted to their ice age time period, with a long coat, fine underwool and a thick layer of fat beneath. If their three-meter height at the shoulders wasn’t big enough, some mammoth tusks have measured four meters!
