The Red Panda is a strange mammal that was once thought to be closely related to bears and raccoons, but is now considered to be in its own family. Despite its name, it is not closely related to the Giant Panda, which is a true bear, though both live in China and feed almost exclusively on bamboo. History: The Red Panda is considered a “living fossil” as it has no close relatives alive today. It has been previously placed in many mammal families, including the Raccoon family and Bear family, and was once placed in a separate family along with the Giant Panda. Though they share a name, it is now understood that these two animals are not so closely related as previously thought.
