The Red Kangaroo is the largest of the dozen or so Kangaroo species. It’s also the largest of the marsupials, so named because they have pouches where their young gestate. There are millions of Kangaroos present in Australia and surrounding islands.
History: 80 or 90 million years ago, the continent of Australia shed Antarctica and New Zealand, and from then, life there began to diverge. Enter Procoptodon, a giant kangaroo measuring more than 6 feet tall and weighing more than 500 pounds that grazed the Australian continent during the Pleistocene age, about 2.5 million years ago. From this mighty ancestor came the many kangaroo species that exist today, from the impressive red kangaroo to the tiny rat kangaroos.
