Manatees are coastal dwellers that swim in warm waters all over the world, from India to west Africa to the Caribbean. They are seagoing mammals that average nearly 10 feet long. The fun-loving creatures appear to enjoy body surfing.
History: Although not the sleekest sea dwellers, it’s thought that Manatees may have contributed to the legend of mermaids. In any case, they are fascinating creatures, and they become more fascinating as genetic analysis reveals mysteries. While it would be easy to look at a Manatee and assume it’s related to the walrus, the closest living relatives of Manatees are elephants and aardvarks.
